Ladies Team Earn a Racing Start on Returning to Top Division

After an absence of around 7 years, the Ladies team returned to competition in the 1st Division of the C&P league with a home match against Tenby on 3 May 24. I went along to witness their return to the top division and to wish the team well.

The weather was “changeable” but the greens were starting to settle after the recent essential maintenance. Before everyone set off there was an air of excitement with an added dimension being 3 ladies returning to play for Tenby against their former club. Chatting with Judith Phillips (Team Captain) in the nets beforehand she said “We are setting out to finish in middle of division 1 this year in order to consolidate on our success as a team last year. We know the competition will be that little bit harder but we have a very strong squad as you can see by the quality of our reserves. The secret to our success this year will be what I call the unsung heroes who will play an important part at some point in the season”.
Marian Barnes, who came via the Club’s Golf Development Group, played for the Ladies team for the first-time last year and was selected to start again against Tenby. Marian said “It is exciting being in 1st division. I just love the competition”

A great Result. The team did themselves and their club proud with a 5-0 win, with Judith Phillips describing it as “a cracking win for our first home match in Division 1”.
The next game is away against Machynys GC on 26th May. Go well this season Ladies.

Adult New2Golf

Thirty, potential new members began their New to Golf lessons yesterday under the expert eyes of Elliot and Alan. The new golfers have 6 lessons with our coaching team, all paid for by Wales Golf. The club charges £40 to cover any admin/temporary membership for the 6 lessons.

Pat Roblin leads a team of 20 mentors working with the New to Golfers, mainly to ensure players quickly feel at home in our club. Julie Doherty, one the mentor team, has also ensured that all the paperwork is in place for each new player.

The coaching is currently taking place on our range but in 4 weeks, around mid June, you may see New to Golfers out on the course, learning from mentors “how we do things at the club”.

If you have any interest in helping us attract members through the New to Golf and Golf Development Group, please chat to Pat Roblin.

HGC Juniors Section

The Juniors season is underway and we have quite a full diary for the season.

As well as the usual monthly Stableford competitions we will hopefully look to introducing a knock out competition for those with handicaps. Yesterday we continued with our Junior New2Golf coaching and we have three groups of very talented youngsters age ranges from 6-14.
This year we have also entered a team in the Wales Golf Sixes. We will be in a league with Trefloyne and Milford Haven and our team of twelve players are keen to come out on top. They held their first practice session yesterday organised by Kris Taylor and Angela Baxter.
Some of last year’s New2Golf Juniors are now working towards getting their handicaps and Cai Morgans was the first to get his last week with an impressive 36.5.

Some dates for the diary:
Junior Championship Saturday 6th July
Juniors Open Monday 29th July
Tigers Shield Junior Scramble Saturday 13th July
Golf Sixes Sunday 2 June at Milford Haven, Saturday 3rd August at Haverfordwest and Sunday 11th August at Trefloyne.

If you would like to support or sponsor the Juniors please contact Huw Jones or Alan Spencer.

Glyn Abbey GC 1 Haverfordwest GC 6

After a recent away win at Tenby GC, Haverfordwest Rabbits looked forward to their match at Glyn Abbey GC.

Led by Rabbits Captain Malcom Arnold supported by Stephen Clancy a hard fought half in their match was achieved. The winning matches were Andy Street & John Rees, Rod Mason & Bob Ellis, Kevin Watson & Carl Evans, Andy Loveridge & Ian Fawcett, Steve Clayton & Rhys Havard. Another hard fought half result by David McGhee & Dominic Elmieh achieved the excellent overall result of 5 wins and 2 halves. For no individual match to lose away is a great achievement.

With an away win 5 points are awarded and for each win within the first 6 matches an extra bonus point is awarded.

Haverfordwest Rabbits currently stand top of the league with 2 away wins and 18 points.

Haverfordwest Rabbits look forward to welcoming Carmarthen GC to Haverfordwest GC on Saturday 8th June for their next fixture.
